Abrus cantoniensis

The dried whole plant of Abrus cantoniensis Hance, family Leuminosae.

 

Active Components:

Plant contains abrine, glycyrrhetinic acid, glabrolide and kudxusapogenol and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Abrus cantoniensis decreases the inflammation of the shoulder of mice caused by the toxin of Staphylococcus which shows the strengthening effect of the immunity.

Aurantium Var. amara

Flower bud of Aurantium Var. amara, family Rutaceae.

 

Active Components:

Flower bud contains volatile oil, limonene, linalool, citronellol, neohesperidin and naringin and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

The decoction of Aurantium Var. amara inhibits Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It increases the appetite and checks vomiting. It exerts curative effect for abdominal fullness and epigastric ache.

 

Bambusatuldoides Munro

The dried middle shavings of stem of Bambusa tuldoides Munro, Sinocalamus beecheyanus (Munro) MuClure var. pubescens. P.F.Li or Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis Stapf., family Gramineae.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Bambusatuldoides Munro exerts strong inhibition effect for pyogenic coccus and intestinal bacillus; it exerts calming, seductive, expectorant and antitussive effect.

 

Borneolum Syntheticum

The resin of Dryobalanops aromatica Gaertn.f., family Dipterocarpaceae.

 

Active Components:

Resin contains borneol, β-elemene, oleanolic acid, asiatic acid and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Borneolum Syntheticum exerts the functions of dispersing the heat and relieving pain. It also exerts function of antisepsis and antibacteria.

 

Clinical Studies:

In 30 cases of treating sequel ache caused by herpeszoster, applies tincture of Borneolum Syntheticum (dissolved 15g of Borneolum Syntheticum in 75% of glycol) to the affected area, 4-6 times a day, all the cases are cured averagely in 8 days.

 

Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii

The bulb or scale leaf of Fritillaria thunbergii Miq., family Liliaceae.

 

Active Components:

Bulb contains verticine, zhebeinine, zhebeinone and choline and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii exerts function of antitussive. Its verticine has antitussive function which resembles codeine. Low dosage of verticine exerts dilatation effect for bronchial smooth muscle of cat and rabbit in vitro while a strong dosage exerts obvious contraction effect. It exerts stimulant effect in the uterus of rabbit and rat. Its verticine strengthens the contraction effect of the intestine of the rabbit in vitro.

 

Clinical Studies:

In 58 clinical cases of treating pertussis, after taking the therapy for 2-9 days, coughing stopped in 28 cases, coughing reduced in 22 cases, and invalidity or discontinued therapy in half-way in 8 cases; the total effective rate is 86%.

 

 

Carapax Trionycis

The shell of Trionyx sinensis Wiegmann, family Trionychidae.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Centipede

Centipede is the dried body of Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans L. Koch, Family Scolopendridae.

 

Pharmacological Action:

The extract of Centipede obviously exerts antagonism against convulsion caused by strychninism. It obviously strengthens the contractile force of the atrial muscle of the isolated heart of mice, and it exerts the function of dilating the blood vessels. Pharmacological Action:

Cortec Eucommiae exerts significant anti-hypertensive effect on cardiovascular system. It dilates blood vessels and lowers the cholesterol in serum and it is diuretic, hemostasic, anti-bacterial and anti-virual. Feeding its decoction to dog continuously for 5 to 7 days may induce calm and sleepiness phenomena.

Eupolyphaga seu Steleophaga

The whole body of Eupolyphaga sinensia Warker or Steleophaga plancyi (Boleny), family Blattidae.

Pharmacological Action:

Flos Albizziae

The flower and bud of Albizia julibrissin Durazz, family Lrguminosae.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Gavaging decoction of Flos Albizziae to mice obviously reduces their spontaneous activities and passive activities. It obviously coordinates with the central inhibition function of barbiturate.

 

Function and Application:

Flos Albizziae regulates qi and relieves depression, nourishing heart and tranquilizing mind, regulates collaterals and relieves pain. It applies for mental depression, disquieted heart spirit, dysphoria and insomnia, blood stasis in channels and collaterals, pain in legs and waist and so on.

 

Flos Buddlejae

The immative inflorescence of Buddleja officinalis Maxim., family Longaniaceae.

 

Active components:

Flower contains several kinds of linarin, catalpol, catalposide, acteoside and echinacoside and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Research discovers that Flos Buddlejae exerts function resembles vitamin P which can reduce the permeability and brittleness of skin and capillary. It is antispasmodic and it promotes mild and transient increase in bile secretion.

Flos Campsis

Flos Campsis treats amenorrhea, bruise and painful swelling caused by knocks and falls, eczema and rosacea and so on.

 

Flos Carthami

The flower of Carthamus tinctorius L., family Compositae.

 

Active components:

Flower contains chlorgenic acid, caffeic acid, catechol , dopa , carthamin, linoleic acid, it also contains volatile oil and ethyl acetate and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Taking small dosage of Flos Carthami exerts mild excitement on the heart pressure, reduces the extent of myocardial ischemia and improves the endurance of hypoxia; it has obvious depolymerized effect for the aggregation of ADP platelet and inhibits thrombosis. It exerts effect of lowering the serum cholesterol, liver cholesterol and triglyceride. It eases ischemic brain edema. The decoction of Flos Carthami causes stimulating effect on the uterus which can produce tension or rhythmic contraction, especially obvious on pregnant uterus; therefore it is contraindicated during pregnancy.

 

Clinical Studies:

For the treatment of coronary heart disease, intravenous infusion daily with 200ml of injection fluid which includes 15ml of Flos Carthami (equivalent to 0.5 gm of raw material) and 5% of glucose solution. In 62 clinical cases of treating coronary heart disease, after 2 courses of treatment (15 days as one course), the total effective rate for angina pectoris is 76.7% and the ECG effective rate is 65%. After the treatment in 86 clinical cases of cerebral thrombosis, the result is: recovery in 44 cases, marked effect in 26 cases and invalidity in 6 cases, the total effective rate is 93.1%, and the average healing time requires 54 days.

 

Flos Chrysanthemi

Capitulum of Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat., family Compositae.

 

Active Components:

Flower contains volatile oils, borneol, chrysanthenone, apigenin and quercitrin and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Flos Chrysanthemi increases coronary flow, improves cerebral blood flow, delays senility, improves anoxia tolerance of heart and brain, removes O2 free radical and protects biofilm from damage.

 

Flos Chrysanthemi Indici

Active components:

Flower contains chrysan-thero, handechinchrysanthelide, chrysanthenone and ursolic acid and so on.

 

Clinical Studies:

Research proves that Flos Chrysanthemi Indici exerts a slow but sustained antihypotensive effect, anti-myocardial ischemia and anti-platelet aggregation, broad-spectrum of antibacterial, antipyretic, and obviously promotes phagocytosis of the macrophage leukocytes.

Flos Lonicerae

The flower bud of Lonicera japonica Thunb., family Caprifoliaceae.

 

Active components:

Flower bud contains many kinds of volatile oils (mainly linalool), eugenol and carvacro and so on. It also contains chlorogenic acid

 

Pharmacological Action:

Pharmacological experiment shows that Flos Lonicerae exerts anti-pathogenic effect for Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic Streptococcus, E. coli, Shigella, pneumococcal, meningococcal and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Anti-bacterial range can be extended if it is used simultaneously with Fructus Forsythiae. Using together with penicillin can enhance the effectiveness of sterilization against resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Flos Lonicerae induces the formation of interferon materials and promotes the role of inflammatory cell phagocytosis. It exerts hypolipidemic effect and inhibits many kinds of malignant tumours.

 

Flos Magnoliae

The flower bud of Magnolis biondii Pamp., M. denudate Desr. And M. lilifora Desr., family Magnoliaceae.

 

Active Components:

Flower bud contains volatile oils, 1, 8 cineole, myrcene, aschantine, 1, 8-cineole, citral, eugenol and pinoresinol and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

The chloroform extract of Flos Magnoliae exerts a strong anti-histaminic effect, and its major active component is the volatile oil. Its decoction inhibits a variety of pathogenic fungi and the inhibition rate of Aspergillus reaches 89%. Its aqueous infusion exerts analgesic, sedative and local anesthetic effect. Its limonene exerts antitussive and expectorant effect; it also enhances the quantity and function of leukocyte. It exerts strong inhibiting effect on Streptococcus pneumoniae, alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus, catarrhal bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus. It also exerts the effect of inhibiting and suppressing fungi, and is one of the main ingredients in the drug of rhinopathy.

 

Flos Rasae Rugosae

Rose Flower is the dried flower bud of Rosa rugosa Thunb. (Fam. Rosaceae).

 

Active components:

Flower contains rugosin A~G, tellimagrandin I, quercetin), β-carotene, roseoxide and eugenol and so on.

 

Clinical Studies:

Research proves that Flos Rasae Rugosae exerts effect of anti-virus (HIV), anti-leukemia virus and promotes bile secretion. It also exerts aromatic and stomachic effect and definite treating effect for irregular menstruation, premenstrual breast tenderness and dysmenorrhea.

 

Flos Rosa Chinensis

The dried flower of Rosa chinensis Jacq., family Rosaceae.

Fructus Chaenomelis

Fruit of Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai or C. sinensis (Thouin) Koehne, family Rosaceae.

 

Active components:

Fruit contains malic acid, citric acid and tartaric acid and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action

Pharmacological study discovers that Fructus Chaenomelis exerts anti-bacterial effect. It obviously inhibits intestinal bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and various types of Shigella. Clinically, it is commonly used for strengthening the tendons and bones and for the treatment of rheumatism, diarrhea and dysentery.

 

Fructus Forsyhiae

Fruit of Forsythia suspense (Thunb.) Vahl., family Oleaceae.

 

Active Components:

Fruit contains phillyrin, forsythoside, rengyol, ursolic acid and rutinand so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Fructus Forsyhiae exerts strong effect of inhibiting typhoid, paratyphoid bacillus, Escherichia coli, Shigella, diphtheria bacillus, Vibrio cholerae, Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococcus and tuberculosis and so on. It obviously reduces the body temperature of the artificial fever in rabbits and it can also reduce the temperature of the normal animals. The decoction of Fructus Forsyhiae obviously eases the degeneration and necrosis of the liver caused by the 4-carbon dioxide; its ursolic acid and oleanolic acid exert curative effect for acute hepatitis. Oleanolic acid has mild function of strengthening the heart. Intravenous injection of pure Fructus Forsyhiae fluid exerts obvious diuresis function for anesthetized dog.

 

Clinical Studies:

In 80 clinical cases of treating upper respiratory tract infection of children, the total effective rate is 91.25%; in 60 cases of treating psonasis by using the injection fluid of a compound recipe of Fructus Forsyhiae, the total effective rate is 80% after10-15 days of treatment.

 

Fructus Ligustri Lucidi

Fruit of Ligustrum lucidum Ait., family Oleaceae.

 

Active components:

Fruit contains nuezhenide, oleuropein , 4-hydroxyphenethyl-β-D-glucoside, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid and ligustrin and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action

Fructus Ligustri Lucidi enhances the humoral immune function. It exerts immunosuppressive effect on cyclophosphamide (Cy) and improves the immune function of cells. Hypodermic injection of oleanolic acid elicits obvious anti-inflammation effect in a variety of experimental inflammations. It exerts protective effect for liver, decreases the accumulation of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) of the serum and triglyceride of the liver, promotes the regeneration of the liver tissues, lowers the cholesterol and triglyceride of the serum, prevents or reduces the formation of atherosclerotic plaque. Fructus Ligustri Lucidi exerts obvious hypoglycemic and anti-lipid peroxidation effect and it exerts protective effect against chromosomal damage. The decoction of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi inhibits the cervical cancer -14 (U14) of the experimental animal transplanted tumors in mice, and the inhibition rate is 30.6-49.2%.

 

Clinical Studies:

In 30 clinical cases of treating hyperlipidaemia, 1 pill each time, 1 month as 1 course of treatment, the effective rate of reducing the total cholesterol is 70.6%, and the maximum reduction rate is 82%. For the treatment of arrhythmia, the total effective rate is 79%; for the treatment of acute jaundice hepatitis, the recovery and effective rate is 80%; for the treatment of senile constipation, the total effective rate is 93.7%; for the treatment of recurrent oral herpes (oral ulcers), the effective rate is 94.1%.

 

Fructus Lycii

Fruit of Lycium barbarm L., family Solanaceae.

 

Active Components:

Fruit contains lyciumbarbarum polysaccharide LBP, Lycium barbarum glycoprotein LBGP, carotene, niacin, taurine and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Fructus Lycii significantly increases the quantity and activity of macrophages, improves the multiplication function of the T cells in the spleen of mice, enhances the body immunity, anti-tumor and anti-oxidation. Feeding its decoction to experimental hyperlipidemia mice can reduce the LDL-C in the blood, alanine aminotransferase in the serum. It also lowers the blood sugar in normal mice.

 

Clinical Studies:

In 42 clinical cases of treating infertility of males (low survival rate of sperm or without sperm), 23 cases return to normal after 1 treatment, 10 cases return to normal after 2 treatments; for the rest of the 9 cases, invalidity in 6 cases without sperm and 3 cases with unfavorable result. 2 years later, the follow-up shows that all the cases which return to normal have generations.

 

Fructus Mori

Fruit of Morus alba L., Family Moraceae.

 

Active components:

Fruit contains rutin, anthocyanidinglucoside, chysan-themin, sugar, and organic acids such as nicotinic acid, tannic acid, malic acid, vitamins B1, B2, C and carotene. Its oleum mainly contains wuoleic acid and small quantity of stearic acid and oleic acid.

 

Clinical Studies:

Research proves that Fructus Mori exerts obvious effect for blood deficiency, dizziness, tinnitus, physical weakness, insomnia and forgetfulness. The effective rates for constipation and sleeping disorder are 82% and 72% respectively. Fructus Psoraleae

Fruit of Psoralea corylifolia L., family Leguminosae.

Gecko

The dried body of Gekko gecko Linnaeus, family Gakkonidae.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Ethanol extract exerts sedative-hypnotic and anti-thrombosis effect; it inhibits bacteria and fungi, and cures wound infection and hemolytic. It is commonly used for treating rheumatic arthralgia, convulsive epilepsy, spasm twitch, lung tuberculosis, osseous tuberculosis, lymphatic tuberculosis and malignant tumours such as esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer and malignant lymphoma and so on. In cooperation with chemotherapy, the effect of inhibiting the development of cancer is significant.

 

Clinical Studies:

For the treatment of tuberculosis-- in 5 cases of treating lung tuberculosis, the result is: recovery in 4 cases and improvement in 1 case; in 10 cases of treating spinal tuberculosis, the result is: recovery in 8 cases and improvement in 2 cases. In 50 cases of treating mazoplasia, the result is: recovery in 42 cases, marked effect in 6 cases and improvement in 2 cases, and the average recovery period requires 50 days. For the treatment of bee sting or scorpion bite, puts one live gecko, 10 gm of herb alkali and 60gm of fresh egg (shelling) into a container, seals it and waits for the gecko to melt totally, then applies the solution to the affected area. Herba Agrimoniae

Herb of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb., family Rosaceae.

 

Active Components:

Herb contains hyperin, quercetin, ellagic acid, agrimol, agrimoninA, B, C and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Herba Agrimoniae exerts anticoagulant and antithrombotic effect. It exerts inhibiting effect for cervical cancer (JTC-26) in human in vitro and the cancer cells in mice.

The decoction of Herba Agrimoniae induces good killing effect for Trichomonas vaginalis. Its concentrated solution exerts significant analgesic effect for gastric pain of mice caused by chemical and physical stimuli.

 

Clinical Studies:

In 20 cases of treating traumatic bleeding and bleeding or oozing after visceral surgeries by using hemostatic powder of Herba Agrimoniae, bleeding stopped in1-2 minutes in all cases. Decoction of Herba Agrimoniae 30g and 2 eggs for the treatment of dizziness, one dosage a day, 3 weeks as one course of treatment, in which 29 cases of Meniere’s disease are clinically cured; in 11 cases of treating vertigo caused by hypotension, the result is: recovery in 6 cases, marked effect in 3 cases, efficiency in 2 cases and invalidity in 1 cases, the total effective rate is 98.3%.

 

Herba Artemisiae Scopariae

The young plant of Artemisia scoparia Waldst. Et Kit., family Compositae.

 

Active Components:

Plant contains capillarisin, capillarisin. Its stems and leaves contain volatile oil with major ingredient of capillene which occupied about 80.2%.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Herba Artemisiae Scopariae protects gallbladder and liver, it is anti-fatty liver and hypertensive. It dilates coronary arteries, increases the flow of the brain, lowers the blood lipid, anti-coagulation and promotes fibrinolysis. Its decoction inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, Diphtheria bacilli, Bacillus anthracis, Salmonella typhi, Paratyphoid bacillus, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, E.coli, Shigella, Bacillus subtilis, Neisseria meningitides, Mycobacterium bovis or mycobacterium hominis in different degrees. It inhibits fungi such as Aspergillus mycelium, and it also exerts anti-tumor effect.

 

Clinical Studies:

Administrating the decoction of Herba Artemisiae Scopariae 30gm, Radix Curcumae 15gm and Folium Isatidis 15gm for the treatment of 1004 clinical cases of acute jaundice hepatitis, the recovery rate is 89.5%; in 250 clinical cases of treating acute jaundice hepatitis of children, the recovery rate is 100%. In 68 clinical cases of treating acute and chronic cholecystitis, the effective rate is 75%. In 82 cases of treating hyperlipidaemia, the average rate of cholesterol in serum before the treatment is 296.9 mg% and the average rate after the treatment is 254.5mg%, the average decreasing rate is 42.4mg%; if the cholesterol rate is higher, the declining rate is greater.

 

Herba Cistanches

The fleshy stem of Cistanche deserticola Y.C. Ma, family Orobanchaceae.

 

Active Components:

Herba Epimedii

The branch and leaf of Epimedium sagittatum (Sieb. Et Zucc.) Maxim. or E. brevicornum Maxim., family Berberidaceae.

Herba Epimedii resembles the function of hormone. For anti-pathogenic function, it obviously inhibits Staphylococcus albus and Staphylococcus aureus; and it also inhibits poliomyelitis and enterovirus. Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae

Root of Gentiana macrophylla Pall. And G. dahurica Fisch., family Gentianaceae.

The injection fluid of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae exerts anti-myocardial ischemia or anti-cardiac infarction function. It forms anti-coagulation system and promotes the dissolution of fibrinolysis; it inhibits the adhesion, aggregation and release of platelet and exerts the stabilizing effect for the anti-hemolysis of the red cell membrane. In observation of 323 clinical cases of treating coronary heart diseases, the total effective rate for angina is 82.3% and for myocarditis is 90%; in 300 clinical cases of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, cerebral ischemic disease and arrhythmia, the total effective rate is 86%; in 36 cases of acute infection of toxic myocarditis of infants, 7-14 days as one course of treatment, all the cases are cured clinically. It reduces the content of triglyceride and increases the secretion of bile in experimental animals. In 100 clinical cases of treating influenza, the result is: marked effect in 50 cases and efficiency in 38 cases, the total effective rate is 88%. Rhizma Atractylodis Macrocephalae

Rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala Loidz, family Compositae.

Rhizoma Coptidis

Pharmacological Action

Rhizoma Coptidis exerts strong anti-bacterial effect for Staphylococcus aureus, Hemolytic streptococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Vibrio cholerae, Bacillus anthracis and Shigella. It inhibits various types of influenza virus cultured by chicken embryo and chicken disease virus. It inhibits 14 kinds of skin fungi. For cardiovascular system, it lowers the heart rate and diastolic pressure, and increases the stroke volume. In 30 clinical cases of treating acute tonsillitis, the effective rate is 93.8% with dropping of temperature within 1 day in16 cases, 2 days in10 cases and 3 days in 2 cases. Its dilute alcoholic or aqueous solution exerts inhibition effect for liver cancer (HCA), tumor S180 and chronic myelogenous leukemia cells in experimental mice.

For the treatment of acute mastitis, inserts clean and fresh piece of Rhizoma Pinelliae into the contralateral nostril of the lesion, once daily, 1-2 hours each time. Pharmacological Action

Rhizoma Sparganii obviously delays the formation period of thrombus and reduces the viscosity of blood. It promotes fibrinolysis, reduces the clot dissolving period, increases the nutritional blood volume of the myocardium and improves the tolerance of decompression hypoxia and hypoxia. Rhizoma Sparganii inhibits tumour S180, solid tumour of liver cancer and leukemia cells L615 of experimental mice.

 

Clinical Studies:

Rhizoma Zedoariae

The axial rhizome of Curcuma kwangsinensis S. G. Lee et C. F. Liang, C. aromatica Salisb. And C. Zedoaria Rosc., family Zingiberaceae.

 

Active Components:

It contains volatile oils, , curzerenone, borneol, isoborned, curdione, turmerone and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Intraperitoneal injection of Rhizoma Zedoariae fluid exerts high inhibiting rate for tumor S180 in mice and exerts direct destroying effect for the tumor cells. For anti-fertility function, Oleum Zedoariae exerts obvious ceasing of pregnancy function for rabbits and its decoction exerts similar effect. Gavages decoction to mice also exerts ceasing of pregnancy effect. Its volatile oil inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, β-hemolytic streptococcus, E. coli, Salmonella typhi, Vibrio cholerae and so on. Rhizoma Zedoariae can fight against leucopenia caused by phosphamidon. Intravenous injection of Rhizoma Zedoariae fluid to acute renal failure rabbits can significantly ease the pathological change of the kidney and increases the urine output.

 

Clinical Studies:

It exerts anti-cancer effect for leukemia, cervical cancer U14, sarcoma S180 and lymphoma 1.

Semen Hovenia

Pharmacological Action:

Semen Hovenis exerts definite anticonvulsant function for central inhibition. It significantly reduces the content of malonaldehyde (mda) in the serum and the tissues of the liver, kidney and brain. It also obviously increases the activity of superoxide dismutase (sod) in the tissues of the liver and brain. Feeding its aqueous extract to the rat which is long-term fed with ethanol can protect its liver from damage caused by the development of lipopolysaccharide, and the elevated ALT, AST, MDA, TG and TC are lowered. If Semen Hovenis is fed one hour before feeding with ethanol, drug for the ethanol-related liver disease can be reduced. Seed contains saponin 1.12%, tannic acid 3.43%, α-(methylenepropyl)glycine, and calamanene and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Oral administration of aqueous extract of Semen Litchi obviously decreases the blood glucose in experimental diabetic rat to 44.82% before treatment, the medical efficacy can last for over one week; Semen Litchi also enhances the role of anti-oxidation and regulation of lipid of the diabetic rats.

 

Clinical Studies:

Clinically, it is effective for the treatment of hernia and swelling pain of the testicles.

 

Semen Persicae

The seed of Prunus Persica (L.) Batsch and P. davidiana Franch., family Rosaceae.

 

Active components:

The seed contains amygdalin, prunasin, chlorogenic acid, 3-caffeoyl quinic acid, oleic acid and lineoleic acid and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Pharmacological experiment discovers that Semen Persicae improves the flow of cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular, antithrombotic and inhibits blood coagulation; it also has good effect on hyperlipidemia and thrombosis. Semen Persicae acts as a good agent for moisturizing the intestine and relaxes the bowels and it is suitable for the constipation of the old or weak persons. The extract of Semen Persicae exerts strong effect for early stage of inflammation; it is anti-allergic, antitussive and makes easier for the phlegm to cough up. It promotes the early maternal uterine contraction and stops the uterine bleeding; helps the white blood cells to phagocytize the cancer cells. Excessive dosage of Semen Persicae may cause toxic effect such as dizziness, vomiting, palpitation and convulsion.

 

Spica Prunellae

Spike of Prunella vulgaris L., family Labiatae.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Spica Prunellae ethanol solution inhibits dysentery, tuberculosis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Vibrio cholerae, Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococcus in different degrees. Its 100% decoction inhibits Ehrlich ascites carcinoma and sarcoma 180 of the mice. Its ursolic acid inhibits lymphatic leukemia cells P360, L210 and A549 human lung cancer cells. Other function includes: increase in bowel movement, titanic contraction of the uterus, sedative and diuretic.

 

Clinical Studies:

Continuous administration of the therapies for 2 months in 45 clinical cases of treating tuberculosis, except 3 invalid cases, obvious improvement is found in 42 cases, the effective rate is 91%. In 29 clinical cases of treating hypertension, the result is: recovery in short term period in 9 cases, efficiency in 8 cases and invalidity in 2 cases, the effective rate is 93.1%. In 2 clinical cases of treating thyroid tumors of the females who are diagnosed nodules on the right lobe of the thyroid, disappearance of nodules is noted after 2 months of treatment.

 

Thallus Laminariae seu Eckloniae

The thalline of Laminaria japonica Aresch., family Larminariaceae.

 

Active Components:

Contains algibate, laminarin, laminine, carotene and vitamin B1, B2, C, P and so on.

 

Pharmacological Action:

Intravenous injection of laminine exerts temporary effect in lowering the blood pressure of hypertensive rabbit. High dose of injection induces enduring effect in lowering the blood pressure. It obviously decreases the cholesterol and triglyceride of the hyperlipoproteinemia mice and at the same time increases the HDL-C. Its laminarin obviously prolongs the time of blood coagulation, strengthens the macrophage function of the mice and increases the growth of serum hemolysin. It exerts counter action effect on the reduction of white blood cells of the mice caused by cyclophosphamide. Thallus Laminariae seu Eckloniae extract inhibits the cancer cells of human in vitro; it reduces the size of the tumor and the inhibition rate is 90%.

It obviously reduces the blood sugar of the normal and alloxan hyperglycemic mice, and increases the peripheral white cells count.
